I have a slow metabolism and I hate exercise. What should I do?

Ever since I was little I have been slightly to severely pudgy. I have always been told that to increase my metabolism I should exercise more. But the problem is I hate to exercise. And when I say hate to exercise I mean really HATE to exercise! I have been involved in sports and fitness programs all throughout my youth, but I never really ever been able to get rid of my large stomach or horrendous double chin. People always tell me how wonderful it feels after running two miles or doing 25 push ups. I am told of a great adrenaline rush that makes you feel alive when you work out. I honestly have no idea what they are talking about because every time I nearly beat myself to death doing sit ups, push ups, running and jogging ETC. the only two feelings I get are: A) Complete and miserable exhaustion. And/Or B) Thinking how wonderful that large pizza is going to taste after I am done exercising!
I would really love to lose some pounds to allow some of my facial features to become more distinct and not have such a huge pot belly. Unfortunately I honestly do not know how to achieve this goal for in the past whenever I participated in an exercise and diet routine, I would put my self through physical torture and starvation for weeks and months on end only to lose a couple of pounds and remain looking chubby. What can I possibly do?

First of all, starvation never works. When your body is starved it goes into "self defense" mode and will start storing food as fat when you do eat. Eating several small meals a day (of the right foods) can in and of itself speed up your metabolism.

You can start by following a healthy diet. Drink lost`s of water. Stay away from everything that got lot`s of sugar in. Exercise is still the best way and over a period the pain you experience will fade away… there is a saying: no pain no gain….

stop complaining and just exercise. of course you don’t like something if you’re bad at it. the more you exercise, the better you will get at it. the better you get at it, the more you’ll like it, and the more you like it the more you’ll do it. and the cycle continues..you have to start somewhere. and you have to PUSH YOURSELF. and make a real effort and focus on what you’re doing at that moment. not reversing everything you just did by eating a pizza right after…

Go against what you hate. Eat a lot of meats and no breads ( you can do Atkins diet if you want it’s GREAT for loosing weight) and run on a treadmill, outside etc… This will raise your metabolism. Try to be active for 60 minutes a day. After you successfully raised your metabolism it’s now time for dieting (just don’t eat fatty foods, breads, junk, and try to stay away from canned foods and you should be good as far as diets go) and the stair stepper! Go to you local gym and use a stair stepper it is the best way to burn fat abouts 3x more efficient then a treadmill. Trust me at first working out seems like crap and you don’t want to do it but when your done and you start seeing some results you will say I like this I think i’ll keep going. You start to feel good about your self insted of hating exercise your love it. It seems all weird now and like you will never do it but you will. I was you at one time until my step brother helped me, now im trying to help you. Have someone workout with you it makes it a lot more exciting.

Also you can’t go to a gym and do 20 sit ups wait 15 minutes to do 20 more and leave only doing 80 sit ups. NO! You set a goal no matter how long it takes you, example 100 sit ups , 10 minute stair stepper, and look for machines for your love handles as these are what people hate the most. Every week add a little bit. Examples 105 sit ups 10minutes 30 seconds.

Summed up — First you must raise your metabolism, second you must workout

The short cut - Dr Atkins diet, google it you can shred pounds up to 7 pounds a week. How it works you eat no carbs what so ever and when your ready to get off of it your slowly raise you carb intake till at a normal level. You will gain about 3-6 pounds after getting off it don’t be alarmed its normal. He sells a book and im sure you can read about it online for free. Its easy and FAST its the number 1 weight loss program in the world. The down sides are you eat alot of meat so its a bit expensive and you loose your energy when on it because your not taking in carbs which give you energy. But overall this sounds like the best way out for you I would say. I really think you should look into it.

There’s a small chance I could go on and on so forgive me ahead of time.
Firstly, you need to get over "hating exercise." That’s not how humans work. Sometimes, a person who is truly healthy AND fit has a different disposition on everything in life than the average person. It’s not about losing weight by starving yourself, only to gain all the weight back in future years. It’s about taking it slowly and becoming lean, strong, and confident and staying that way. Being healthy and fit gives you mental clarity and confidence. "Runner’s highs" and the "adrenaline rushes" are bullshit. Sometimes that happens but that’s not at all the best part of proper fitness. The best part is the part you take with you everywhere and that you experience always. You need to learn to stick to healthy habits and love those habits. Habits like eating healthy, natural foods like real meat and fruits & veggies. And habits like going to the gym and exercising consistently. Every week.
But, anyway. The answer to your question is: Eat small portions and run 45 minutes or so every day and lift weights. It’s easy and you’ll burn weight fast.
However, MY answer to your question is: Do some research on health & fitness. Learn the benefits of regular exercise and proper eating. And then join a gym. Go to the gym three days a week. On Monday work your chest & triceps muscles and abs. On Tuesday work your back & biceps muscles. On Wednesday work your Legs & Shoulders and abs. And every few days go out running. Learn things about fitness and change your lifestyle and see if you don’t love it. Cause you would. Promise. Good luck with whatever you choose.

You can join a diet management website that tracks your food intake. The thrill of exercise comes with endorphin release or perhaps for short bouts of 2 mi runs/25 push-ups, the feeling of accomplishment.

Since you hate exercise, but presumably are able to do it, by itemizing fastidiously what you eat you will learn that it’s too easy to put something in your body but impossible to remove it beyond a certain rate of consumption, i.e. your daily metabolic rate. I think you may be overstating how high or low a metabolic rate may be. Who are you benchmarking against? A skinny kid that eats a lot and never seems to get fat? It’s impossible. By the laws of conservation of mass, there will be a threshold limit until which the body will not be able to metabolize food that is put in the body. Which will then be converted eventually to fat.

By saying that you loathe exercise, you have unfortunately removed one of two methods to consume body calories. The other method is limiting food intake. However, beyond a certain low threshold, your body is liable to go into starvation mode and will reduce the metabolism further to conserve itself. Therein lies your predicament.

In order to remove this excess weight that you have, you can be patient and monitor your diet religiously, which means no stray thoughts about pizza, large no less, or coerce yourself to exercise. If you have the motivation to post this, then the fear of shame is greater about your "double chin" and "large stomach."

All in all, be realistic about what you want to achieve. There is no free lunch when it comes to your body. Down the line, the implications of your current choices will affect your overall health and well-being, your exposure to disease and overall longevity.

    Pudgy Carl!

Close your eyes for a few seconds and take a couple of slow, deep breaths. Maybe _you_ are making yourself crazy, not your double chin.

Accept yourself as you are. The real Carl transcends your large stomach, the real Carl is deep in your soul. I like you and yet I’ve never seen you. Honest.

I’m a fitness trainer who helps people hate exercise less. I’ve found that exercise has a soft side (e.g. how to get motivated, and how to conquer boredom) _and_ a hard side (e.g. what routine to use for solid abs, and which exercises reduce weight).

Almost everyone ignores the soft side and plunges into boring, unproductive workouts that they hate. So, here are two "soft" tips to get you started.

First, set some goals. Don’t go at it blind. Write out what you want from exercise and write with feeling.

Second, use variety to conquer boredom. If you don’t like exercising in mid-morning, change, and try late afternoon. Don’t like running, try biking. Keep changing.

Did you take those breaths, or did you just read about them? I’ll know. :-)
