  1. Hey! Says:

Will singing without vocal exercises improve the voice?
I heard everywhere that people must do some vocal exercises in order to obtain and practice their voice…

But my question is : if you just sing , without doing this exercises, will anything improve?

    Thank you!

Not really. You’re born with the voice you possess. Even with extensive musical education (writing music, reading musical notation, playing an instrument, etc.), your voice is your voice. And your singing voice will remain your singing voice. Vocal exercises does improve the sound and quality of your voice, but the talent/gift of a beautiful singing voice must be there in the first place. Singing will improve your confidence in singing and speaking, but without training and exercising and talent, your voice is yours and will remain such.

Exercises strengthen and expand your voice. They help you develop your breathing, pitch and enunciation of the words. This is where you experiment with different techniques and sounds,. When you are learning a new song, use it in your exercises - take bits out of it - intervals or short phrases or the sounds in some of the words. Work on the difficult bits like they were separate from the song. Use these exercises to solve problems.

Do you have a teacher? They will give you exercises to work on that are tailored especially for your voice as well as help you with your songs. Songs on their own won’t teach you very much about singing. The song is where all the bits you have learnt and practiced fall together.

Don’t believe the "you must have talent first" stuff. Everyone can learn to sing.. How well depends on the effort you put into it, finding what your voice can do and choosing the right material and genre that suits your voice, your musical interests and personality. The things you need to be able to sing well include - a set of vocal cords that work, you are breathing and you have a brain, patience, and commitment. Singing is about 1% physical and 99% mental effort. Finding your voice is a challenge and a wonderful, exciting voyage of discovery.

Best wishes for your singing future.

vocal exercises were developed for a reason, these exercises help strengthen and perfect you voice. but it doesn’t mean that not using them wont help your voice improve. i haven’t taken singing lessons since i was 13 (now 17) and my voice is perfectly fine (it would probably be a thousand times better if i used the exercises though). so long story short, you voice can improve even without the use of vocal exercises but not as well if you were to use the exercises.
